Financing a used car: questions to ask before you sign

5 min read · Written for a demonstration website. For information only, not legal or financial advice.

The monthly payment is the number everyone asks about, and it is the least useful one on its own. The same car can cost very different amounts depending on how the loan is built. These are the questions to ask, wherever the financing comes from.

What is the APR?

The annual percentage rate includes the interest and certain fees, so it is the fairest way to compare two offers. Compare APRs, not monthly payments.

How long is the term?

A longer loan lowers the monthly payment, but you usually pay more interest in total and you may owe more than the car is worth for longer. Ask to see the same loan over two or three different terms.

What is the total I will pay?

Ask for the total of all payments, plus the down payment. That single figure lets you compare offers honestly.

Can I get pre-approved elsewhere first?

A pre-approval from your bank or credit union gives you a rate to compare against. You are free to use it, or to take the dealer's offer if it is better.

Which products are optional?

Extended service contracts, GAP coverage and similar products can be useful, but they are optional. Ask for an itemized contract and decide on each one separately.

QuestionWhy it matters
Is there a prepayment penalty? It decides whether paying the loan off early saves you money.
Is the rate fixed?A fixed rate keeps the payment the same for the whole term.
When is the first payment due?It avoids a missed payment in the first weeks.

Read before you sign

Check that the price, the term, the APR and the down payment in the contract are the ones you agreed. Never sign a contract with blank spaces. Approval and terms always depend on the lender and on your application, so no website can promise you a rate in advance.
